How Often Should you Change an Incontinence Pad? A Practical Guide for Day, Night and Healthy Skin
Knowing how often to change an incontinence pad can make an important difference to comfort, leak protection, confidence and skin health.
There is no single changing schedule that works for everyone. How often an incontinence pad needs changing depends on the amount of leakage, the absorbency of the product, whether it is being worn during the day or overnight, and the condition of the wearer's skin.
The best approach is to check the product regularly and change it when it becomes wet, soiled, uncomfortable or close to its absorbency capacity.
How often should an incontinence pad be changed?
An incontinence pad should generally be changed when:
- The surface remains wet against the skin.
- The product feels heavy, swollen or uncomfortable.
- The wetness indicator shows that it is becoming full.
- Leakage appears around the legs or waistband.
- There is a noticeable odour.
- The wearer has had a bowel movement.
Rather than following a rigid timetable, pay attention to the product's wetness indicator and the wearer's comfort.

Many absorbent pads briefly feel wet immediately after a leak. Allow the absorbent core a short time to draw the liquid away from surface. Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust advises changing a pad when the surface remains wet or when the wetness indicator has changed along more than half its length.
A pad should always be changed promptly following a bowel movement.
How often should you change an incontinence pad during the day?
During the day, check the pad regularly and adjust the routine to the individual's needs.
Someone with occasional light bladder leaks may need fewer changes than a person experiencing frequent or heavier leakage. Activity levels, fluid intake, mobility and access to toilet can also affect how often a change is needed.
A daytime routine may include checking the product:
- After waking and washing.
- During the morning.
- Around lunchtime.
- During the afternoon.
- In the evening.
- Before going to bed.
This is only a guide. The product should be changed sooner if it becomes wet, full, soiled or uncomfortable.
Modern absorbent pads and pull-up pants are designed to draw urine away from the surface so that the skin remains drier. This means it may not be necessary to change a high-quality product immediately after every small leak, provided it still feels dry, secure and comfortable.

Should you change a pad after every bladder leak?
Not necessarily.
A suitable incontinence product is designed to absorb more than one small leak. It does not usually need to be changed immediately when:
- The surfaced still feels dry.
- The product remains comfortable and secure.
- The wetness indicator shows that capacity remains.
- There has been no bowel movement.
However, people with sensitive, broken or vulnerable skin may need more frequent checks. Speak to a GP, pharmacist, district nurse or continence professional if the skin is regularly becoming red or sore.
How often should an incontinence pad be changed at night?
A properly fitted, higher-absorbency product may provide protection throughout the night, depending on the wearer's level of leakage.
Before going to bed:
- Clean and dry the skin.
- Fit a fresh product.
- Check that it is the correct size.
- Make sure the leg cuffs and waistband sit securely.
- Add an underpad to the mattress for extra reassurance if required.
It may not be necessary to wake someone solely to change a product that remains dry, comfortable, and secure. However, the product should be changed during the night if:
- It is full or leaking.
- The wearer feels wet or uncomfortable.
- The product has moved out of position.
- There has been a bowel movement.
- The wearer has damaged or particularly vulnerable skin.
- Overnight changes are included in an individual care plan.
For moderate to heavy leakage or assisted changing, Novamed all-in-one offers adjustable fixation tapes, leakage barriers, a wetness indicator and absorbency of up to 3100ml, depending on the size selected.
For added protection, Novamed Disposable Underpads can help protect mattresses, chairs and other surfaces. Each underpad measures 60 x 90cm and includes adhesive tapes on all four sides to help keep it in place.

How can you protect the skin during pad changes?
Prolonged contact with urine or faeces can contribute to redness, soreness and moisture-related skin damage.
At each change:
- Remove the used product gently.
- Clean the skin using lukeware water or a suitable gentle cleanser.
- Avoid scrubbing or rubbing.
- Pat the skin dry carefully.
- Check for redness, broken skin or soreness.
- Apply an appropriate barrier product if recommended.
- Fit a clean, dry product.
Avoid putting talcum powder or thick oil-based creams directly beneath the pad. These can interfere with the product's top layer and prevent urine from being absorbed effectively, potentially increasing wetness and leakage.
Seek professional advice if the skin is broken, bleeding, weeping, persistently red or painful.

Signs that you may be using the wrong product
Frequent leaks do not always mean that a product needs changing more often. They may indicate that it is the wrong size, incorrectly fitted or not absorbent enough.
Review the product when:
- It leaks before the wetness indicator shows it is full.
- There are gaps around the legs.
- It twists, sags or moves during the use.
- The waistband is too tight or too loose.
- The wearer experiences rubbing or pressure marks.
- Clothing or bedding is frequently wet.
- Changes are required unusually often.
Choosing a larger size does not automatically provide greater absorbency. The correct product should fit snugly without causing pressure or discomfort.
Which Novamed incontinence product is right for you?
The right product depends on the level of leakage, mobility, lifestyle and whether the wearer changes independently or receives assistance.
For light bladder leaks
Novamed Bamboo Light Incontinence Pads are designed for light incontinence. Each discreet pad is 36cm long, provides 550ml absorbency and features a soft bamboo top sheet with odour-control protection.
For active and independent users
Novamed Pull-up Pants are worn like ordinary underwear and may be suitable for active users with light to moderate incontinence. They are available in medium, light and extra-large sizes, with absorbency ranging from 1700ml to 2100ml.
For moderate to heavy incontinence
Novamed All-in-Ones provide higher absorbency, adjustable fixation tapes and a wetness indicator. They may be particularly helpful for overnight protection, limited mobility or assisted changing.
For beds and chairs
Novamed Underpads provide an additional layer of protection for mattresses, chairs, wheelchairs and other surfaces.
Underpads should provide extra reassurance rather than replace a correctly fitted body-worn product when one is required.
Should you wear two incontinence pads at once?
Wearing one disposable incontinence product inside another is generally not recommended.
The waterproof backing of the inner product may prevent urine from reaching the absorbency core of the outer product. Double padding can also create additional bulk, affect the fit and increase the risk of gaps and leakage.
It is normally more effective to use one correctly fitted product with appropriate absorbency.
When should you speak to a healthcare professional?
Incontinence pads can help manage bladder leakage, but they do not treat its underlying cause.
Contact a GP or another healthcare professional if:
- Incontinence has started suddenly.
- Leakage is becoming worse.
- Passing urine is painful or difficult.
- There is blood in the urine.
- You experience repeated urinary infections.
- There is persistent abdominal, pelvic or back pain.
- The skin is badly irritated or broken.
- Incontinence is affecting sleep or everyday life.
NICE recommends that people using absorbent products for long-term management have their needs reviewed regularly including the suitability of the product and the condition of their skin.
