Eating out with Incontinence: Dining Without Worry

Dining out can be a time to connect with others, celebrate a special event, or simply enjoy some great cooking. However, when you’re managing incontinence, the idea of heading to a restaurant can feel overwhelming.

Just know, it doesn’t have to be...

Incontinence is much more common than people realise, and not everyone with the condition has the same triggers. In short, the key to dining out confidently is understanding what works best for your body and planning around it.

Slow it Down

The first step to overcoming the anxiety of dining out is to remind yourself that it’s okay to take things slow. Try opting for venues where you know the menu and layout. Familiarity removes the fear of uncertainty, allowing you to focus on enjoying the moment.

One method you could try is preparing a dish similar to what you might order in a restaurant as a way to see how your body reacts. While a bit unorthodox, this approach could give you confidence when trying something new and reduce the risk of unexpected symptoms while out.

Time to Order

When it’s time to order, knowing what foods and drinks to avoid can save you discomfort later. As we mentioned earlier, everyone’s triggers are different.
While there are some common bladder irritants, such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy or acidic foods, that doesn’t mean your options are limited. Many restaurants offer a variety of dishes with foods such as lean proteins and fibre-rich sides.

Fruits like bananas, apples, and watermelon are great choices for dessert, offering sweetness without the risk of bladder irritation.

"Can I Still?"

If you love coffee, you don’t need to cut it out entirely. Decaffeinated coffee or herbal teas can be excellent alternatives. For those who enjoy an alcoholic beverage, these can still be enjoyed in moderation, though it’s wise to start with smaller amounts to see how your body responds.

Some of us are fiends for spice. Even though spicy foods are known to irritate the bladder, some people may find that mild spices are perfectly tolerable. Again, as we have emphasised throughout this blog, the key is to pay attention to your body and adjust accordingly.

Reclaim the Table

Don’t let incontinence take your seat at the table.

By understanding your body’s needs and making the necessary adjustments, you can be prepared and aware, allowing you to sit down at the table with confidence.
Remember, you deserve to enjoy life’s moments—whether that’s a quiet coffee date or a lively dinner with friends.

Incontinence doesn’t define you, and it certainly shouldn’t define your dining experience.

Bladder and bowel incontinence may be caused by conditions which can be treated medically. Please consult your physician for medical advice and guidance.
