Innovations in Incontinence: Apps and Gadgets That Can Make Life Easier

Living with incontinence presents unique challenges, but innovations in technology are transforming how individuals manage their conditions. From apps that track supplies and patterns to gadgets that promote better pelvic health, these tools empower users to regain control and confidence in their daily lives. In this blog, we explore some of the most innovative solutions, including DiapStash and Toilet Map, devices like the Elvie Trainer, and practical tools such as Squeezy. Each offers a unique way to simplify and enhance life for those navigating incontinence.

DiapStash

What is DiapStash?

Imagine having a personal assistant to manage incontinence. That’s what DiapStash offers. This innovative tool, born from the creator’s need for a better way to track supplies, allows users to track leaks, manage their diaper supply, and identify patterns in their condition.

The Story Behind DiapStash

In an interview with DiapStash, they shared their inspiration:

"I wanted to be able to track my diaper stock. There was an app on iOS but nothing for Android. I took the idea as an opportunity to learn a new mobile app development technology and create an app that works on Android and iOS."

Key Features

Since its launch, DiapStash has grown significantly and now includes:

  • Reminder notifications
  • Sharing stock status or history with another person
  • Detailed data tracking (diaper state, leaks, day/night use)
  • Support for cloth diapers

This comprehensive approach empowers users to better understand their needs and plan accordingly.

User Feedback

The DiapStash team has received glowing reviews from users:

"We’ve received feedback from users saying DiapStash has been incredibly helpful in reminding them when it’s time to restock as their diaper supply runs low. It’s also helped users better understand their own patterns, such as when they are likely to need changes. This insight allows them to plan more effectively, whether for a typical day or longer trips, by knowing exactly how many diapers to bring along. Many have shared that these features have given them peace of mind and stronger control over managing their needs."

What’s Next for DiapStash?

The team plans to enhance the user experience further by expanding statistics and potentially introducing the ability to track individual accidents. They’re also considering integrating with wearable devices to offer more personalised insights. This commitment to user-centric design ensures that DiapStash continues to empower individuals to manage incontinence effectively.

Elvie Trainer

How Elvie Trainer Works

As you can imagine, managing incontinence isn’t always easy. However, it can be eased by strengthening the pelvic floor. This is where the Elvie Trainer comes into use.

This discreet device connects to a smartphone app to support pelvic floor exercises. Monitoring muscle movements, providing insights into how effectively exercises are performed, ensuring proper technique and steady progress.

Features That Support Progress

The app accompanying the Elvie Trainer offers:

  • Short, guided workouts designed to fit easily into daily life.
  • Interactive elements to keep users engaged and motivated.
  • Progress tracking tools to help users monitor their improvements over time.

The device also provides real-time feedback on the technique. If muscles are not being used correctly, the app gently guides the user to adjust for better results.

Effectiveness and Considerations

For many users, regular practice with the Elvie Trainer has led to better bladder control and reduced symptoms. While not everyone will find it suitable, consulting a medical professional can ensure it’s the right fit for individual needs.

A Tool for Better Pelvic Health

By combining feedback, guided exercises, and a focus on consistency, the Elvie Trainer empowers users to take control of their pelvic health. It’s an effective tool for those seeking more confidence and control.

Squeezy

What is Squeezy?

Squeezy is an app designed by physiotherapists to support pelvic floor exercises. It includes a ready-made programme that follows health guidelines, so users can practice exercises proven to be effective. For those working with a physiotherapist, the app can also be adjusted to fit individual recovery or health goals.

The Story Behind Squeezy

We spoke with the cofounder of Squeezy, Myra Robson to find out more about Squeezy.

"Squeezy came about after I was asked what the main challenge was in my role as a pelvic health physiotherapist. I said that it was difficult to ensure that women remembered to do their pelvic floor exercises, and my friend said, 'you could do an app for that.'"

Since its launch, Squeezy has undergone significant evolution:

"Squeezy was redesigned a couple of years ago to fit in with updated app design and to include a higher level of content while keeping simplicity at its core. It has associated social media platforms, videos, and content on the website, as well as a directory of pelvic health physiotherapists and access to online consultations.

There is also a connected version of Squeezy which clinics can send to patients, and track adherence and the completion of outcome measures, bladder and bowel diaries, and symptom trackers."

Key Features

  • Reminders and Visual Guides
The app helps users stay consistent with reminders while visual guides ensure exercises are done correctly.

  • Symptom Diary
Users can track progress and share updates with healthcare professionals.

  • Customisation
Physiotherapists can tailor the app’s exercises to suit specific needs.

User Feedback

Squeezy has garnered praise for its practical approach to pelvic health. Myra notes:

"Squeezy remains one of the top-selling, paid Apple apps month on month and has excellent reviews on the Apple and GooglePlay app stores."

What’s Next for Squeezy?

Looking to the future, the team behind Squeezy has ambitious goals:

"We would love Squeezy to be issued to every woman, and to any man who has symptoms of bladder or bowel dysfunction. All women should be performing pelvic floor exercises three times a day as a preventative measure, and continuing this for life! We would love women to use Squeezy every day."

Exciting developments are also on the horizon:

"We have lots of social media plans. We have also just released a new and exciting 'Squeezy Maternity' programme to provide a wealth of expert advice and information for women during pregnancy and in the post-natal phase."

Future Opportunities

"Squeezy could be connected to smartwatches and fitness trackers – anything that helps people to connect more to their pelvic floor! However, it is incredibly expensive to develop this type of connectivity and therefore not an immediate priority for us."

Tips for Users

For those using Squeezy, Myra offers key advice:

"Squeezy is about prevention and maintenance, as well as resolving stress urinary incontinence and helping with a range of bladder and bowel issues. My key advice is that if you are struggling to understand how to do your exercises, or symptoms persist after three months of consistent exercising, go and see a pelvic health physiotherapist for an assessment."

Toilet Map

What Is Toilet Map?

Toilet Map was created to help users find the nearest public toilets. It is practical, as it makes navigating public spaces less stressful, especially for those dealing with incontinence.

Key Features

  • Large Database
It features over 14,000 public toilets listed across the UK, making it the UK's largest database of publicly accessible toilets, it also provides opening hours, accessibility features, and facilities. This means users plan their journeys with greater confidence.
  • Community Updates
Users can add or update information about local toilets, ensuring the database stays accurate and relevant.
  • Accessibility Options
Filters allow searches for toilets with accessibility features, helping users find facilities that meet specific needs, such as wider spaces or grab bars.
  • Find Nearby Toilets
The app uses location services to display toilets closest to you, ideal for emergencies or quick access.

Why It’s Helpful for Incontinence

For individuals with incontinence, Toilet Map offers reassurance by providing clear information about nearby facilities. Features such as accessibility filters simplify finding the right toilet, in urgent situations.

Conclusion

The journey to managing incontinence is deeply personal, but today’s technology is making it easier than ever to stay proactive and empowered. Whether it’s through tracking supplies with DiapStash, improving pelvic health with the Elvie Trainer, building a routine with Squeezy, or finding peace of mind with the Toilet Map, these apps and gadgets cater to diverse needs. By leveraging these innovations, individuals can focus less on the challenges of incontinence and more on enjoying a fuller, more confident life.
