What Is A Stoma bag

An ostomy bag is a device similar to a pouch that the surgeon attaches to your abdomen or stomach when cancerous growths make it necessary to remove most or all of the large intestine. The bag collects bowel movements and functions as a temporary substitute for the intestine in which water, stool and undigested matter can pass into. This article goes over what types of stoma bags are available today and how you can adequately care for them.

"A stoma bag is a device that collects waste from ileostomy patients like me—small pieces of plastic on either side connect to an inflating tube also made out of clear plastic. It's difficult to see, but there's a little hole that goes into my body. When I empty the bag, I put on an old shirt and ties the thin tube around the back of it, so a large part of the bag is hidden behind my back. "The entire stoma bag is held securely by tapes directly attached to the skin, which are replaced every few weeks.

"The process I use to change bags is very similar to changing normal adult diapers...As you can imagine, it can be pretty messy at times. This is nothing like living with cancer—in a much worse!" said one patient.

Because stoma bags are usually made of solid material, they are durable and can last for up to 10 years.

There are many different styles of ostomy bags available today. The main types of ostomy bags are shown below:
An ileostomy bag is the most significant type of ostomy bag and is used for people who have an ileostomy. These bags collect waste from both the small and large intestines. The bag comes in two parts; the stoma and an inflatable pouch. The stoma bag is fitted to your body on one side of your belly, and the pocket is inflated on the other side.

The inflatable pouch is typically made out of plastic, and it may be yellow, precise, or even nude-coloured depending on the brand. The pouch is inflated using an air pump which can be bought at any pharmacy for around $20 USD. This part of the bag can also be a little challenging to use for some ostomates as it must either be worn at all times or left in place while toileting. This can make it challenging to use outdoor. Some people additionally supplement this bag with a reservoir that is placed inside the pouch, and the urine flows into and out of the reservoir. This helps maintain moisture in the stoma and stoma bag.

The other part of the ileostomy bag is the stomal arm which is typically made out of vinyl and ranges in colour from yellow to pink if it is caused by a woman-owned business. Stomal bags are attached to both sides of your waist via Velcro strips, creating a pouch that resembles an undergarment. Like other types, these bags come with an air pump which you can buy at any pharmacy.

Adult nappies are also known as Absorbent garments. They are open-backed, like a swimsuit, and cover only the stoma. Nappies are made of a wet-resistant material for easier cleaning and better hygiene during a bowel movement. Nappies are well-liked by ostomates because they feel more like regular underwear than any other type of bag.

A colostomy bag is the second most significant kind of ostomy bags and is used for people who have a colostomy or ileo-colostomy procedure through the last part of their large intestine or from their small intestine to their abdominal wall (also called an Ileostomy with end-colostomy). A colostomy bag can collect waste from either the colon or rectum.

The colostomy bag comes in two types: Drainable and Closed-Ended. Drainable bags hold liquid, while closed-ended bags purge liquid through the tubing. The close-ended colostomy bag is attached to a drain which is usually in the abdomen. This drain runs through a " shaped device called an "ittmann Stoma Broach" The Broach has a clamp that when loosened will allow any excess fluid to run out of the rectum/colon and into a toilet or drainage system.
