Incontinence and Theme Parks: Focus on the thrills, not the spills

It’s almost Halloween, one of the most popular times of the year to visit theme parks. Some of you may be thrill seekers, and some may not (it’s okay the teacup ride is just as exciting as a rollercoaster). Regardless of what you seek, you still deserve to enjoy your day at theme parks.

In this blog, we are going to explore ways that can manage your condition and still experience the fun and thrills, without worrying about the spills.

Planning for a Comfortable Day

Consider Fast Passes to Avoid Long Lines

Now everyone’s least favourite part of the day… Lines. We all know the feeling, the nerves build the closer you get. The boredom of long lines, barely moving. Dealing with incontinence and needing to use the restroom while in the middle of the line, not wanting to give up your space in line but also wanting to avoid an accident.

Consider purchasing a fast pass, could be quite an investment but will mean that you can get through quicker. Some parks may even offer some form of fast pass if you explain your condition to them.

Map Out Restroom Locations

Let's face it, no one enjoys queuing for the toilet, especially when you're dealing with incontinence. The good news is that theme parks are designed to keep you moving, and that includes providing plenty of toilets!

To make your day even smoother, familiarise yourself with the layout of the park. Grab a map at the entrance – they usually highlight the location of the toilets. Many parks also have apps with interactive maps that can help you find toilets more easily.

Knowing where to go when you need to go can alleviate the stress making you more comfortable and confident.

Don’t forget, park employees are there to assist you. If you're having trouble tracking down a loo, just ask! They'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Preparing Essentials for Peace of Mind

Pack the Right Supplies

People spend the majority of their days at theme parks. So it is essential to bring everything you'd need to manage your incontinence every day.

This might include:

  • Incontinence products: Whichever products you use to manage your incontinence are essential to bring. Whether it’s pull-up pants or light incontinence pads, it's never a bad idea to have spares. You never know when you might need them, so it’s smart to be prepared.

  • Wipes: If you need a quick clean-up, pack some wipes.

  • Spare change of clothes: In case of an accident, having a spare change of clothes helps you stay clean and prepared for any situation.

  • Disposable bags: disposable bags provide a discreet and hygienic way to dispose of used products.

The peace of mind that having these items close by will help you feel more prepared for the day.

Dress for Comfort and Confidence

Wearing, loose-fitting clothes in darker colours, can help camouflage any accidents that may occur, helping you still feel comfortable but also covered. You'll be well-equipped to handle any incontinence challenges that may arise.

Communicate Your Needs for Extra Support

Inform the Staff

Employees at parks are there to help make sure that you enjoy your time at the park. If you let them know ahead of time your needs they’ll be able to better accommodate your needs. The employees will be happy to help and will be understanding, incontinence is quite a common condition so they will most likely be used to helping people dealing with it.

Park staff are trained to assist visitors with all sorts of different needs. Don’t be afraid to ask them any questions or ask for assistance.

Stay Comfortable Throughout the Day

Manage Food and Drink Intake

It probably sounds counterintuitive to suggest drinking, but staying hydrated is important. Dehydration can worsen incontinence issues so make sure you drink throughout the day.

To limit the effects of incontinence it is recommended that you limit caffeinated and alcoholic drinks as these are known to irritate the bladder, instead try and opt for water wherever possible.

Food is also something you need to watch for, try and avoid spicy foods, as this can contribute to the need to use the toilets, as well as sugary items that may upset the stomach.

This doesn’t mean you have to avoid these items completely, you should still be able to enjoy your day how you want to, so if you do plan on eating or drinking these things, do so in moderation.

Take Advantage of Shows and Attractions with Seating

If the anxiety of your condition is getting too much for you, then seek out some of the park entertainment or slow rides with seating.

Not every ride goes at 200mph with several loop-the-loops, parks know that everyone isn’t the same, and we all enjoy different things. Parks will offer a variety of different rides, some slow and more entertainment-driven, some fast to get the heartbeat racing. Take it at your own pace, if you feel anxious try something relaxing to help calm yourself down.

Some parks also have a wide array of entertainment ongoing throughout the day across the site, so take advantage of them, take a seat and relax, enjoy the show. This can help you give yourself a break and distract yourself from your condition.

Enjoy the Experience with Confidence

Theme parks can be an enjoyable experience for everyone, no matter if you are incontinent.

Prioritise your comfort, and remember to focus on the joy of the day, knowing you are prepared for it.

Bladder and bowel incontinence may be caused by conditions which can be treated medically. Please consult your physician for medical advice and guidance.
