What Are Adult Nappies

Have you ever wondered what an adult nappy is, or if you should be wearing one? You might have seen them at the bottom of the car seat next to your child's regular nappy.

After reading this post, it will be easier to understand why your child may have been wearing one. Plus, there are some practical things for parents or caregivers about cleaning and carrying these products that anyone can use to their advantage. After reading this post, you'll know more about what they are used for and how to care for them properly.

Adult Nappies are a type of diaper that adults wear under their clothes as protection against nappy rash caused by incontinence leakage. It is basically an absorbent net with a layer of plastic or vinyl to keep the moisture away from the skin. The style depends on the person's needs, either through discretion or simply to avoid nasty leaks.

Adult nappies come in many different brands and sizes, and there are many kinds of diapers available for purchase. How often you change your adult nappy will be determined by what type of product you buy. Here are some things to consider:

Disposable – These can be disposed of after use depending on what level of protection is needed. The level depends on the amount of liquid elimination one has throughout the day and how heavy their bladder leakage may be. It is usually a one-time use and can be thrown away with no problem.

Reusable – These diapers are made from either plastic or cloth and can be washed and reused indefinitely. They may require washing after each use, depending on your lifestyle. Some brands of reusable nappies have a "line" that can be cut for easier changes.

Nappie: This is the most basic type of adult nappy, and it's just what it sounds like, a diaper. This product is used by those who have leaks from prolonged standing, those who have a meagre urine output or those who simply need a protective barrier during the day to not leak everywhere they go.

Now that you have a general idea of the different types of adult nappies available, here are some things to consider when buying one.

Thought Process:

The first thing to consider is the type of adult nappy you need; replaceable or reusable. A diaper is the most basic type of adult nappy and can be bought at any store that sells baby products like CVS, Walmart, Walgreens etc. They come in different sizes and shapes for men and women. Since they are disposable, you can throw them in the trash when their use is over.

If you're looking for a reusable version, make sure you buy one that has a lining of some sort. These linings can be made from plastic or cloth. The ones made from the material are usually softer and more absorbent than plastic linings, but they can get stinky (no pun intended) if they get wet. Linings generally last about six months to one year, depending on the care you give them.

Another consideration is the size of adult nappy you need; extra small, small, medium or large. Most disposable products come in these sizes, but if yours doesn't, it usually means it's the same size as the regular diaper size for babies. A reusable product will also have different sizes to choose from. Some may even have a size chart with their products. For example, if you wear a medium in regular underwear, you should wear it in their adult nappies.

Washing:

The most important thing to remember when caring for an adult nappy is its ability to absorb fluids and keep the wearer dry and comfortable. Some brands will include washing instructions on their packaging or inside the package that you'll most likely throw away before reading them. This is where it gets tricky, and knowing which washing cycle works best is essential to maintaining the longevity of your adult nappies so they don't get stinky.

Most will say to wash the adult nappies in warm water with mild detergent. Some will say to use hot water while others have no washing instructions at all. Then it hits you. The baby wipes you use to clean up your baby's messes may be just what you need to clean up your own and save yourself the embarrassment of stinky and wet adult nappies.

Wiping:

One of my favourite things about adult nappies is the plastic lining that comes with most. It is a blessing for those who can't always control their bowel movements and those who suffer from incontinence as it helps keep their pants dry and leak-free. The plastic liner also helps to keep the urine from spreading throughout the day.

If you have issues with leaking, you might have a little more trouble when it comes to wiping yourself. The reason for this will be because your adult nappy will absorb fluids between your legs, so it will be a little harder to get rid of all of that excess moisture.

Also, some brands have a "line" to cut if you need to change your adult nappy quickly and don't feel like going through the entire product. Your adult nappies must be left alone after using them and not worn again for a few hours before reusing them.
